Fundamentals
Westview’s behavioral management program is based on several fundamental principles: consistent expectations, structured living, and responsibility.
Consequences are a part of life. Too many times though, people fail to see the consequences of their own deeds because they have not been raised in an environment of consistent expectations. We share the true nature of consequences with boys to help them learn and mature. As they make the connection between action and consequences, boys can move to become productive members of the community in which they live.
Structured living involves boundaries; these boundaries require accountability in several areas:
- Housekeeping - Boys clean their rooms, make their beds and complete their cottage chores on a daily basis.
- Promptness – Boys learn to use their own time wisely, and to respect the time of others.
- Table Manners - Boys practice acceptable behavior at meal time.
- School Behavior - Boys learn to follow all school rules, complete all assignments, and treat school officials and staff members with dignity and respect.
- Personal Hygiene - Boys are responsible for maintaining proper personal hygiene, including brushing their teeth and bathing regularly.
- Personal Appearance - Boys learn to care for their personal appearance, and to properly wear and care for the clothes that are a part of their appearance.
- Church - Boys learn appropriate conduct for church.
In life, the more responsible people demonstrate themselves to be, the more rewards they receive for their conduct. For example, if I show myself to be a good, responsible employee, my boss is more likely to promote me, or reward me with a raise. However, if I am irresponsible and do not do my job, my boss might consider firing me.
These are some realities that apply in almost any given situation of life, and we want our boys to have a deep understanding of these realities. How can we impart this knowledge to them? We equip them with a set of five ethical principles.
